Sales of Travel Guides Down, Travel Memoirs Up

As reported by Bookselling This Week, armchair travel is the popular option this summer. Instead of buying travel guides to help us find our way around unfamiliar locations, we're traveling vicariously via travel memoirs. Elizabeth Jordan (head buyer at Book People in Austin, Texas) noted, "Travel memoirs are selling well -- it seems people are interested in traveling, but can't afford it."

That's kind of sad but not really surprising given the economy and the cost of gas and airfare. But even reading about different places is learning something.
