Jackson’s 1962 novel is narrated by 18-year-old Merricat Blackwood as she tells the story of her family, their small fortune, dark secrets, and isolated lives. Shirley Jackson (1916–1965) was an influential American author and popular writer in her time. She is best known for her dystopian short story, The Lottery, first published in the June 28th, 1948 issue of The New Yorker magazine. We Have Always Lived in the Castle was later adapted into a play by Hugh Wheeler in 1966, and in 2002 Book magazine named Merricat Blackwood one of the best characters in fiction since 1900.
