Dickens Goes Public
On June 30, 1857, Charles Dickens gave his very first public reading in St Martin's Hall in London. In a surprising choice given the season, Dickens read from A Christmas Carol. Thanks in part to the popularity of the reading, Dickens became one of the first authors to go on extensive international book tours to read from his books, earning more from these readings than from his writings.
