Obama's Parenting Advice: Harry Potter

MotherReader reports on some parenting advice delivered by Obama in a recent speech: "Over the course of four years I made time to read all of the Harry Potter books out loud to my daughters. If I can do that and run for president, then you can find time to read to your kids. That’s some of the most special time you have with your children."

I just love to hear things like this. It's the easiest parenting advice to follow and the best bit is that it has an enormous impact on your child's education, imagination and your relationship.

I heard Obama speak about 2 years ago to a bunch of teachers at a banquet for a program that provides teachers in Chicago Public Schools with literacy training and money to buy really fantastic children's books. There was only time for two preselected (by the people putting on the banquet, not his people) questions.

The first question was about his favorite book as a child ("Where the Wild Things Are," along with a couple of other things). The second was about education funding. As much as I agreed with his responses to the second question, what really got me was what he said just before he left.

After shaking the hands of the organizers, he started to leave. Suddenly, he turned back around, ran to the front of the stage, and said, "And if they are older students, tell them I really loved Toni Morrison." He was just so excited about reading. It was that moment that I knew I loved him (don't tell my husband).
