Film Adaptation of Rushdie's Midnight's Children

Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children will finally make it to the big screen. As reported in the Guardian, Deepa Mehta will direct the film adaptation of Rushdie's book. The project began "when Rushdie dined at Mehta's home recently and she asked him if he would consider a collaboration." Rushdie will be co-writing the screenplay beginning in mid-March 2009. The film is expected to start production in 2010. The Guardian notes that “[w]ith its bravura mix of historical events and inventive flights of fancy, the 650-page novel has long been seen as unfilmable.” We'll see about that.
