Check out the interview of Chad Post over at
Omnivoracious, Amazon's book blog. Post is the director of Open Letter Books, the University of Rochester’s new non-profit publishing house for works in translation. In typical fashion, Post is fairly optimistic about the future of international literature in the U.S.:
[M]ost people--reviewers, bookstores, other publishers--have a built-in idea that “international literature doesn’t sell.” This really isn’t true. Readers are interested in books from other countries ....
And:
[N]owadays, as compared to six years ago, [book reviewers are] aware of international fiction and the lack of coverage given to it. At least there’s a dialogue and general appreciation ....
I loved Open Letter's newest publication:
The Taker and Other Stories by Rubem Fonseca and scored it 4.5 out of 5. See my review
here.
