The shortlists for the Costa Book Awards (formerly the Whitbread Awards) have been announed. This award is probably the second most important British book prize after the Man Booker Prize. The five winners will be announced on January 6th, and the "Book of the Year" will be announced on January 27th. Here are the shortlisters in the Novel and First Novel categories:Novel:
- The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry
- The Other Hand by Chris Cleave (only available in the UK right now)
- A Partisan's Daugher by Louis de Bernieres
- Trauma by Patrick McGrath
First Novel:
- The Behaviour of Moths by Poppy Adams
- The Outcast by Sadie Jones
- Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith
- Inside the Whale by Jennie Rooney

I've read The Secret Scripture and Trauma and loved them both. I wouldn't mind seeing Sebastian Barry get the win.
