Oprah's Summer Reading List

Since I've been on the topic of summer reading lists, it's appropriate to mention that O, The Oprah Magazine, has announced its 2009 Summer Reading List, titled 25 Books You Can't Put Down. Say what you will about Oprah's reading tastes, but her recommendations sell books. Lots and lots of them.

I'm currently reading her first pick, Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann, and I'm enjoying it. Look for a review later this week here at Literary License. I've also heard good things about John Burnside's The Glister, though I haven't read it. Other than the McCann novel, I doubt I'll be picking up any of these.

Thanks for the link. I think Oprah usually picks interesting books, even if they don't always appeal to me.

If you want a copy of The Glister, I'd be happy to send you mine.

Sue Miller's The Senator's Wife is on the list, and it is not to be missed. I think Oprah made a big mistake by not including The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Great summer read.

Thanks for the link. I'm bound to check out the books, although I usually find the books that Oprah picks to be so depressing!

Rhapsodyinbooks,

Thanks so much for your generous offer, but I've got a copy of The Glister sitting on my bookshelf. Now I just need to find the time to read it!

Does it ever scare you about how much influence Oprah has over reading tastes?

The primary benefit of Oprah's book club to me is that those picked get mass produced and are widely available at deep discounts a year later (and available for almost nothing at library sales).

By the way, Oprah's naive view of science has aroused a lot of ire.
