Denmark Will Publish Controversial Book about Mohammed's Wife

Sherry Jones's controversial novel about the 6-year-old wife of Mohammed, The Jewel of Medina, will be published in Denmark. You’ll recall that Random House canceled its contract to publish the book in the U.S., citing fear of reprisals and violence from Muslims. A spokesperson from the Danish publishers association Trykkeselskabet told a Danish newspaper, "Fear or threats should not keep a book from being published. It would be principally and entirely a renewal of all that Denmark has already been through with the Mohammed cartoon affair."

I saw this story in PubLunch today. All of my husband's family on his father's side lives in Denmark, so I should have no problem getting a copy if I want one. I just need to learn to read Danish...

I also heard on NPR that other U.S. publishers are fighing for the right to publish this book, so I think you'll have an opportunity to read it in English. Nothing like a good controversy to get people interested.

Makes you wonder if the initial decision not to publish was designed to pump up interest?
