12 Days of Books: Day 1

Gift Idea #1: A subscription to One Story ($21)

Purpose: May your giftee never again be without something good to read

One Story is a non-profit literary publication that publishes one carefully-selected short story every three weeks. The mission: “[T]o save the short story by publishing in a friendly format that allows readers to experience each story as a stand-alone work of art and a simple form of entertainment.” One Story publishes each writer only once, ensuring a variety of new voices.

Each installment of One Story is compact—20 or so pages printed as a small, monochromatic booklet—and perfect for slipping into a purse or pocket. I always keep an issue or two with me so I’m never without something good to read during an unexpected wait. U.S. gift subscriptions of One Story are only $21 for 18 issues, and international subscriptions are available for a bit more. Thanks to One Story, your giftee will remember you fondly all year long.

I'm loving these gift ideas. Glad that more are coming. That is a really good price for the subscription. To bad I want these things for myself, and not for someone else.

I know what you mean. Just send the link to a friend or family member with the note "Hint, hint." Maybe they'll figure it out.
